David Cumming MM

An article in the Stirling Observer of 24th July 1945 reported as follows: –

“The award of the Military Medal for gallantry in Italy has been made to Cpl. David Cumming, Royal Engineers, 8 Abbey Road Place, Stirling. He is a native of Brechin and came to Stirling 14 years ago where he was employed as a ham curer with Messrs McGrouther Ltd., Scottish Bacon Curing Factories, Cornton Stirling. Six years ago he married Louise Salisbury, 8 Abbey Road Place.

Prior to joining the Army in March 1941, he was a member of Stirling Home Guard from its formation. Three years ago he went out to Iraq and later took part in the North African Campaign. He was also at the Solerno and Anzio landings and on the 17th of April this year, shortly before the capitulation of the German Armies in Italy, he was slightly wounded. The award of the MM was given for his gallantry during a Commando landing.

Cpl. Cumming is expected home on leave next month.”
