When the prefabs were built in Cornton, included within the development was a Community Centre. At that time there existed in Cornton a tangible Community Spirit of which this building was the hub. It was the locus of the only local Church and many Cornton kids attended Sunday School there.

Many thanks to Pastor Rev. Hamish Wishart for the provision of these photographs.

On June 19th 1966 Cornton Community Centre became available for use for the last time and was used for the prizegiving for the Sunday School.
After the Community Centre and the cottage style prefabs had been demolished a new Community Centre was built in the Johnston Avenue hub along with the shops.
The Church decanted in 1966 to it’s new building in Achray Drive where it thrives today.
Sheena Dorrington recalls: –
There was a chute and Play Area behind where the Community Centre was built.
On a Friday night we used to go to the Community Centre and there were competitions and you got a prize. You got half a crown if you won but you had to sing and dance your heart out because, I went to dance classes. My Granpa got me a beautiful Blue party dress and I sang “Alice Blue Gown”. My rival was Veronica Dick, she sang all the Scottish songs but she didn’t dance!

I remember it when I was a kid. There was a reasonable community spirit in the early 50’s but it gradually fell away.

I’ve got a recollection of going on a Sunday picnic to Callander and the bus left from outside the community centre. Must have been very late 50s or early 60s.
