John Forty (Professor Arthur John Forty) was the founding professor of the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick and later served as the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Stirling from 1986 to 1994.
At Stirling, after the University had been without a Principal for a year, he took on the post and helped the University recover from financial cuts, imposed in 1981, and proceeded to develop its potential. Forty acknowledged that some thought it was a strange choice to move to Stirling at that time, but he saw its potential.
His work at both universities left a lasting impact on the institutions and their academic communities. Professor Forty, who was born on the 4th of November 1928, lived to witness the naming of the Student Accommodation, of which he was justly proud, but died on 14th May 2023 aged 94.
John Forty’s Court was opened in Cornton in 1994 as a large, purpose-built apartment block providing Student accommodation for the University.
