The “New Statistical Accounts of Scotland” of 1845 has the following to say about the “Zoology” and “Botany” of the area.

The word “phaenogamous” is an archaic word which became widely used by botanists in the early 19th century and is deemed to mean “having true flowers with distinct floral organs”. Basically “Flowering”.
The “Mr Forrest…formerly alluded to” is, later in the document, identified as Mr William Hutton Forrest, Surgeon in Stirling who has reported in depth about the benefitsof the “Airthrey Spring” in Bridge of Allan.
